Karen is a member of The Law Society of New South Wales No. 7707 and holds a current and unrestricted Practising Certificate entitling her to practise as a solicitor and barrister in New South Wales. She trades under the registered business name, lewislegal ABN 66 995 465 638 and is insured by LawCover Insurance Pty Limited Firm No.18225.
Karen has degrees in arts and law from Sydney University and over 30 years experience as a lawyer and a lecturer in a wide range of business and property law areas. She was first admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales on 9 July 1982.
Karen was employed as a solicitor for leading Australian law firm Freehills from 30 August 1982 to 19 September 1986. During that time she worked mainly in the commercial litigation area and was involved in major pieces of litigation as a member of a team and also had the conduct of her own matters in superior courts. These matters involved research and advice in company law, contracts, equity, insolvency and trade practices law. She also worked in commercial sections of the firm and was involved in diverse commercial and financing matters.
Karen was employed for 18 years by NSW Department of Education and Training where she taught a wide range of legal subjects in the accounting, real estate and management diploma courses.
Karen worked as a solicitor in a general commercial legal practice in Bondi Junction from December 1997 to 30 June 2002. During that time she acquired skills and experience in acting for smaller businesses and individuals in a broad range of areas and in a wide variety of matters including the sale of a national league basketball team and drafting and negotiating contracts with international corporations for accommodation at the Sydney Olympic Games.
From 1 July 2003 Karen established her own legal practice trading as KS Lewis and, as from 1July 2006, trading as lewislegal.
In the period from 1 September 2007 to 30 June 2010 Karen was also a partner in the legal firm NextGenLaw which advised and acted for high net wealth individuals in the area of estate planning law. During this time she acquired skills and knowledge in the highly specialised areas of wills incorporating testamentary trusts, business succession, superannuation and taxation.
